Last night we celebrated the third year of the Purple Feet Foundation with 20 friends and family at the Caddy Shack in Mechanicsburg, PA. Decked out in purple, with purple candy, purple prizes and purple Bingo cards, we had an amazing time together and raised $769 for this year’s thinc Program.
We’re definitely making this celebration an annual event because the folks at the Caddy Shack were so generous, and the facility could not have been nicer. Also winning in the generosity category is the anonymous donor who covered the night’s expenses allowing enabling everyone’s donations to go directly to the thinc Program. Thank you!
And, thanks again to everyone who joined the celebration. With 97 days until our third year of the program Martha and I are in awe at the number of folks who are helping make this passion project of ours possible.

If my wife Martha didn’t teach all day, I am pretty certain she would own a flower shop. Martha kicked off the Spread the Love for PFF campaign by sharing one of her passions – flowers!
Martha organized a Valentine’s Day carnation sale and sold 900 carnations. She raised more than $400 for PFF’s thinc Program and brightened up her school in red, pink and white for a day.

From Valentine’s through Easter you can help Spread the Love for PFF in a variety of ways and win a weekend away with two free nights at a Marriott.
Spread Your Talents The whole idea behind PFF’s thinc Program is to give students an opportunity to explore the possibilities and pursue something they are passionate about. So what are you passionate about? Share that with others and have them contribute to PFF.
Do you love to host parties? Host a special dinner. Hold an Easter Egg Hunt for the children of your family and friends. It’s a great excuse to get together and fun for the whole family.
Do you love photography? Offer to take group photos for your family and friends for a donation to Purple Feet.
Do you love kids? Host a craft session for kids. Offer to babysit for a few of your friends with kids. Turn it into a fun party for them with pizza and games. Host a flowers/sweet treats/lemonade stand at your school or neighborhood.
Do you love games and sports? Organize a PFF poker night. Play a round of golf with friend and create a system to raise money for each birdy, bogey, etc.
Do you love to teach? Provide small group or private lessons on any topic from computers to piano

Martha and I cannot thank you enough for your support of the Purple Feet Foundation (PFF) this past year! It was a very memorable 2011. We received our official 501(c)3 status. We ran our second annual thinc Program in August at the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for students and teachers from Harrisburg and Philadelphia, PA. We hosted our first professional development workshop for teachers. And, we gained official status on Global Giving’s website by raising over $5,000 from 120+ donors in less than a month.
None of these things would have been possible without our friends and family who have donated time, talent and resources. Thank you all for believing passionately in the mission of PFF.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of 150 donors, sixteen students from Harrisburg and Philadelphia spent an amazing week together exploring the possibilities and thinking about the future.
I liked going to Villanova University because it showed us that we can do anything!
I liked the Barnes and Noble trip because I got to pick a new book for the summer. I loved this week.
I wish we could make these five days into two weeks. And maybe go swimming twice.
Monday The first day is about getting students to know each other and themselves. To do this, students engage in a variety of icebreaker activities including a campus-wide geocaching challenge. We also prepare the students for the next day at Villanova University by completing a career interest survey with each child. The day ends with a bang as they have late night Einstein Hour followed by their daily journal writing activity. Day one is a reflection on The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Each student gets an autographed copy to take home. Oh yeah, they also start their hot air balloon project.
Tuesday Students venture to Villanova University to see what a college classroom looks like. They experience a hands-on lab at the College of Nursing, tour the athletics facility, learn about the admissions process, eat lunch at the student center, and conduct research in the computer labs. And, the day has just begun. After their first college visit, students travel to Barnes and Noble for a mini-shopping spree. With reading materials in hand, we return to the Freedoms Foundation for a special presentation from George Washington himself. We emphasize to the students that sometimes the people who have the greatest impact on our lives are people we never meet. The day wraps up with our journal writing reflection.
Wednesday After two days of thinking about our own interests and goals, we step back and look at those who have helped us along the way. Students take a trolley tour of Valley Forge National Park followed by Einstein Hour in the park. Since it is mid-week, we figure it is the perfect time for some rest and relaxation at the pool. The evening brings us an opportunity to show students that the “c” in thinc is about choices. Students create and construct their own game boards. And, don’t forget the journal writing reflection.
Thursday Our second college visit takes us to Cabrini College. Students learn about what it takes to get into college and then tour the campus to see what all the “buzz” is about. We do have a project to complete so our next stop is at the computer lab where our students create glogs about their experience this week. That takes a lot out of them so pizza is ordered just in time for their interpretive poetry class. Upon returning to the Freedoms Foundation we have Einstein Hour, a special green screen project and movie night to fit in before the week comes to an end. But, not before they write in their journals.
Friday On our last day we launch the students’ hot air balloons, sign each other’s weekbooks (think yearbook, but only for a week) and conclude the program in grand fashion with a Diet Coke and Mentos fireworks display.
Martha has a classroom pond complete with elodea, koi, and other aquatic plants. One of her water hyacinths bloomed today with a very appropriate purple flower. Perhaps a coincidence, perhaps not. But it’s definitely worth sharing either way.
We only have a few months until the thinc Program so we’d certainly appreciate any support you can provide.
